Why Hiking Mount Kerkis Is Unforgettable
Standing at 1,434 meters, Mount Kerkis is the highest peak on Samos and one of the most impressive mountains in the Aegean Sea.
Hiking Kerkis takes you through pine forests, past chapels or monasteries like Evangelistria, prophet Helias and Zoodohos Pigi and onto barren rocky ridges offering endless views over the island and the endless blue sea.
However, Kerkis’s rugged beauty also brings real challenges: steep paths, exposed ridges, and the possibility of rapid weather changes.
That’s why careful planning and mountain respect are key when hiking Mount Kerkis.

Essential Safety Tips for Hiking Mount Kerkis by yourself
1. Prepare Thoroughly Before Your Hike
• Study your hiking route carefully. Mount Kerkis has multiple trails, but not all are clearly marked.
• Select a trail that matches your experience and fitness level. South trails are more easy. If you are looking for an adventure western ridge offers a unique view to the sea but in the same time dangerous.
The western trail can be challenging, with climbing sections and steep downhills with loose rocks on the way back.
2. Check the Weather
• Always check the weather before setting out on Mount Kerkis.
• Strong winds, dense fog, heatwaves or sudden storms can make hiking dangerous.
3. Pack the Right Equipment

• Wear hiking boots or your trail running shoes — the rocky and slippery terrain of Kerkis demands it. • Warm clothes even for the summer months.
• Carry at least 3 liters of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat.
• Long hiking trouser can protect you from the sun and some spiky plants.
• Bring a detailed map or an offline GPS app (signal can be weak around the mountain).
• A headlamp is essential always if you hike in the mountain even during the morning you can face difficulties that can make you to lose a lot of time.
• A power bank for your phone it can help you a lot if you want to use your gps and still keep you with enough battery for your safety.
4. Time Your Hike Carefully
• Start your trek early in the morning to avoid the dark if you hike alone.
• Make sure you have enough time to descend before dark unless you are well-prepared for night hiking. As a professional during the summer I prefer the sunset hikes and to hike down during the night in order to avoid the heat.

5. Stay on the Trail and Stay Connected
• Always stick to marked trails. Mount Kerkis has steep cliffs and isolated areas off-trail.
• Let someone know your planned route and return time.
• Carry a fully charged mobile phone, but don’t rely on coverage in remote parts of Kerkis.
6. Do not fell in the trap of the numbers.
•Some routes are slightly shorter some longer but all require almost the same climb aspect. So the smaller one automatically is the most difficult ones with more technical steep sections.
• The 12km hike on the mountain during the summer is totally different than the same distance in the flat terrain with comfortable temperatures.
7. The vehicle for the access to the starting point.
• All of the trails start in places that require to drive for about 20min in gravel roads. During the beginning of the summer this roads are in bad condition because of the rain season and some times are not even accessible with 4x4 small jeeps.
• After the end of June the conditions of the gravel roads is better but again it can cause a damage to your vehicle if it is not hight enough.
