Samos is famous for its local honey made from pollen of the pine trees and local mountain herbs that also have medicinal properties. Samos is also well known for its rich biodiversity in native plant species that are only found on the island because of its central geographical location. This of course, gives a wide variety of flowers for bees to feed on and provides an amazing flavor and aroma to the honey produced locally.
A morning spent with the beekeeper and a bee biologist talking about the magical world of the bees – their society and how important their pollinating services are for the ecosystems and us human. After that, we will wear our protective uniforms and take a look inside the hives. This will give you a great insight into beekeeping and the equipment needed to harvest honey. You will get to know more about their behavior, their life cycle and their role in the ecosystem. After, a break for a traditional snack and souma we are going to take a hike in the mountain trails to explore the wild bees of the area and learn more about them.
